Ohio · restaurants and food service

Restaurant insurance in Ohio.

A dine-in restaurant, a takeaway kitchen and a café with a full bar do not have the same exposures. Review how food is prepared, served and delivered, what would interrupt operations and what your lease requires. Use this guide to gather the information an agent needs before comparing restaurant insurance proposals.

Describe the whole operation

List seating, operating hours, cooking methods and the mix of dine-in, takeaway, catering and delivery. Identify alcohol service, entertainment, special events and any mobile or off-site operation. Supply the lease and explain whether you or the landlord is responsible for the building, kitchen systems and improvements.

Estimate the busiest week as well as a normal one. Tell the agent about holiday catering, patio service or plans to add a bar. An accurate description makes the review more useful than a broad restaurant category and helps surface the operations that need specific underwriting attention.

Connect coverages to the losses you would face

A business owner’s policy may package liability, property and business income coverage. Review liability for customer injuries and food-related allegations. List kitchen equipment, furniture, inventory and tenant improvements for the property discussion. Business income coverage is tied to policy conditions and the covered cause of an interruption.

Ask separately about equipment breakdown and spoilage. A broken cooler, spoiled inventory and lost sales are different parts of a loss. If you serve alcohol, discuss liquor liability. Online ordering and payment systems merit a cyber review, and staff-related allegations merit an employment-practices discussion.

  • Delivery: identify company vehicles, employee cars and third-party platforms.
  • Alcohol: describe sales, hours, events and service procedures.
  • Lease: review required limits and responsibilities for improvements and repairs.

A cooler failure before the weekend

Illustrative scenario: a walk-in cooler fails before a busy weekend. You discard food, pay for equipment repairs and cancel reservations. Ask the agent to examine each cost rather than assuming the property policy covers the entire interruption.

Which cause of failure is insured? Is the stock covered by spoilage terms? Does an equipment-breakdown endorsement extend to business income, and are waiting periods or limits relevant? Ask about off-premises power interruptions too. Keep maintenance records, inventory documentation and a record of lost business. This exercise helps you assess a proposal; it does not say the hypothetical loss is covered.

Ohio staff and delivery exposures

Ohio workers’ comp is arranged through BWC state-fund coverage or approved self-insurance. Confirm BWC classifications before using payroll in an estimate.

Ask about stop-gap employers liability. Discuss reportable restaurant payroll with BWC, including the treatment of tips. For employee deliveries or supply trips in personal cars, review hired and non-owned auto liability and disclose the actual delivery activity. Confirm accepted use and driver requirements; the existence of an employee’s auto policy does not complete the business’s review.

Gather numbers that reflect the business

Prepare annual sales broken out by food, alcohol, catering and other operations, along with payroll, employee duties and claim history. Estimate replacement values for kitchen equipment and contents. Bring information about fire protection, hood cleaning, refrigeration maintenance and the property’s construction.

Have the agent compare exclusions, deductibles, business income limits, spoilage limits and any applicable waiting periods. Update the review when you change cooking equipment, add delivery, open another location or expand alcohol service. A quote should describe the restaurant you plan to operate during the coming year.

Before you request quotes

Prepare for an agent review

  • Break out food, alcohol, delivery and catering sales.
  • Describe hours, cooking equipment, seating and special events.
  • Gather the lease and values for contents and tenant improvements.
  • Prepare payroll records, tips information and BWC classifications.
  • List refrigeration controls, maintenance and recent claims.
  • Ask about spoilage, breakdown, income interruption and delivery.
Request an agent review

Your request is saved for review. Quote timing and agent availability are confirmed separately.

Common questions

Does business income insurance cover every restaurant closure?

No. Ask what triggers coverage, which causes of loss are covered and how limits and waiting periods apply. A decline in sales or an equipment failure is not automatically an insured interruption.

Is liquor liability the same as general liability?

Treat alcohol service as a separate coverage question. Tell the agent whether you sell or serve alcohol and ask how the proposed program addresses that exposure.

Are third-party delivery services enough to address our auto risk?

Describe both platform deliveries and any trips your own staff make. Ask the agent about the business’s exposure and the coverage documents for each arrangement.
